Tuesday, 6 April 2010 Today, as I was walking home from the bus-stop, I heard from my Granddad that this cheery old lady from House #33 had passed away. She was the same old lady whom I had seen trotting outside and along the row of terraces, dressed in her usual traditional floral-print two-piece set clothing. This soon became her trademark, or at least what I recognized her with. My Grandma used to be quite close to her, often chatting with her if she witnessed her passing by. That old lady, though ostensibly brittle and crystal-fragile, held a burning flame inside of her. It was what I could see and it was what everyone could see. I used to shy away from adults I did not know. She was one of those who cheerily called me by a nickname many adults used to refer me by, and I would merely smile sheepishly and hide behind my grandma's leg. In the recent years, as I got older, she got older too, and she eventually became too brittle to be able to move around like before. Though she still did, I could sense something I did not like at all: the accompanying subject being unwilling to accompany her. I did not like such kind of feelings. They cause my nose to sour and sometimes even tear. They cannot appreciate old people. I will skip the lecture because I believe everyone knows what I will be saying, and it is only because they refuse to acknowledge it... claiming that they are too busy or too frustrated to do so. What pains me the most is seeing that children of old people do not go the extra mile to bother with them -- some even throw them out. Is humanity this heartwrenching? Do/did they not recognize that these old people, though naggy, are the ones who brought them up single-handedly and showered them with whatever love they could claim? The best way to fully assimilate such sensations is by imagining. Imagine how YOU would feel if YOU were the one to get thrown out by your kids. Imagine how helpless YOU will be. Imagine how hopeless YOU will be. After that encounter with the old lady and her accompanying subject, I never had a good impression of her family. She had more than 2 sons. And like how drama serials portray them to be, none of them truly care for her. And yet they still get that amount of fortune from her. Irony. According to my Grandma, she had fallen down the stairs the second time in her recent years last week. Sent to the hospital, she was nearing death. The Grim Reaper was on his way. Somehow, this Grim Reaper, like all the Grim Reapers serving the old, was dressed in white and had a few angels tailgating him. That was what I could visualize in my mind. And a week later (or so), she passed away. She was 91. Writing this, I could feel the sour, stinging sensation in my nose, and a lump in my throat. This is not Humanity as how I once saw it.
